Radio Southland is a not for profit non-commercial radio station that has 3.5 staff, yet manages to reach almost every community & group in Southland - 24/7, 365 days a year.
How do we do it? We have dozens of people who make it happen - our incredible volunteer Programme Makers - who volunteer their time every week, fortnight or month to make radio & podcasts for their communities. Without them, Radio Southland would be silent. The many diverse groups around our region would not have a voice in NZ & Southland's media.
We have people with a wide range of disability experience, religious beliefs, ethnic cultures, Maori, youth, women, the rainbow community, children, arts & culture, music genres - all working together out of the passion in their hearts to give people like them a voice, and information & entertainment to enjoy.
Our job is to empower them, mentor them, and facilitate the space for them to provide that voice.
The result is a beautifully eclectic mix of programming that you can either tune into at a certain time on radio/livestream to follow - or listen to their podcasts at your convenience and enjoy the knowledge, experience, laughs, tough times, triumphs and learning opportunities they bring.
Our place in the media is a unique one - and one of huge value. That has been recognised over the years within the volunteer & community sectors, including an award in 2017 at the then Trustpower Community Awards for the station's contribution to Arts & Culture in our region.

So this International Volunteer Day 2021, we want to take a moment to say thank you. To every single Programme Maker we have, and have had in the past - thank you for your time, your hearts, your talents, your commitment to your community. Thank you for your voices. You ARE Radio Southland.
If you would like to join the team and be the voice for your community - we welcome your interest and are here to help you make it happen. Send us an email - darren@radiosouthland.org.nz, or give us a call on 03 218 98 91!
